My family and I (ages 20 - 65) are interested in planning a last minute trip to Northern Italy (especially the lakes and dolomites) starting Oct. 8th 2018. We have 2 - 2.5 weeks and would need to use trains, buses, or other transportation methods (no car rentals). What suggestions do you have for our itinerary, travel logistics, and if this is a good location given the time of year. Thank you!!!

Going to be hard without a car rental to actually get into the mountains and not just the towns on the outskirts at this time of year.
I would highly recommend a car rental(s) for your trip.
Probably a beautiful time to be in the mountains, catch an early snowfall, see some fall color, trails will not be crowded but still should be walkable, etc...
Lakes there are many and the public transit options at them vary quite a bit depending on which one. They will likely be quite sleepy in October.
