italian itinerary

I am really struggling with the itinerary; we are flying in/out of Rome and we are hoping to hike/walk and explore. We are flying in to Rome in a couple of weeks, I've tentatively booked lodging for 3 days. We hoping to explore Umbria and Cinque Terre, and I have been in contact with B&Bs/Inns and have tentative arrangements to stay in: 4-5 nights in Spoleto, or Perugia, or Orvieto, (wouldn't mind exploring the towns such as Todi, Assissi, Gubbio, Norcia, Civita Bagnovegio)then on to Florence for 1 night; then, Cinque Terre for 3-4 nights; and finally, back to rome for the final night, airport hotel (suggestions?). So, feedback: (1)does this itinerary make sense? (2)Spoleto/Perugia or Orvieto (all intriguing) - I guess the key, without having a car would be hiking locally and having eating facilities convenient to lodging. (3) suggestings for CT lodging - we will probably try to hike it at least 2 of the days (an earlier reply I sent said it wasn't open the whole way, we will train or boat around the areas unpassable by foot) and I'd really like to sleep hearing the waves crashing, if that is at all possible.

If you are leaving in 2 weeks and don't already have lodging set up in the Cinque Terre you might have trouble finding anything. It is high season there. Most people secure their lodging in the CT 6 months or more in advance. You should have a nearby Plan B in case you strike out when looking for a place there.

While we love Orvieto, but other towns such as Spoleto are a better location for hiking and as a base for seeing other Umbrian towns. Perugia is a "big city" in Umbria so I'd suggest Spoleto as a more charming option. And you can easily get to Perugia and Assisi from there via train. Orvieto is just too long of a train ride away for daytrips. Gubbio is harder to get to as well. Combo of train and bus required. If you get a car then anything is possible. We spent 5 nights in Spello wihtout a car and it was fine, we kept very busy, and did some hiking out of Spoleto, but we were not able to go on some other hikes because of transportation issues.

If you stay overnight in Assisi, you can walk a footpath to Spello (from the Rocca Maggiore in Assisi). Or, stay in Spello (but there are many more walking-distance sites in/near Assisi). Todi is lovely, too. Orvieto is an easier daytrip from Rome, if you wanted to adjust your schedule to add a night there.

Hi Sharon. Sleeping hearing the waves crashing will be tough. For CT lodging, you can try Levanto - next town north from CT; easy access to CT. Enjoy your trip!
