Italian Ferries to Sicily

I am driving my RV to Rome and then headed south to catch a ferry to Sicily. Ideally I would like to get to Catania, Sicily from either Naples or Salerno. However, it sounds like the ferries are a bit sketchy!! Does anyone have experience with booking and using either the Naples to Catania, Sicily, or Salerno to Catania, Sicily ferries?

Thanks so much!

ferries are a bit sketchy

Are you serious? The same people that use trains use ferries.

I only said that because I read that the TTT line had very poor customer service, very dirty cabins and the ships looked unreliable..I was in no way intimating taking ferrys was a bad thing I just wondered if one ferry company was consistently more reliable than another. I have taken ferries many times, but given the number of ferry ACCIDENTS around the world I just was investigating if there was one that people with more experience in Italy had more confidence in. Perhaps I should have explained myself better.

I grew up in a foreign country so I probably used the wrong word. Sorry! I will be more careful selecting the correct word in the future.

From what I can tell (googling and rome2rio.com), the shortest ferry ride is from Reggio, Calabria to Messina. rome2rio estimates less than 7 hours, including driving from Salerno to Reggio and from Messina to Catania. There's a direct ferry from Naples to Palermo.

I would suggest driving down to Reggio Calabria and taking the ferry over to Messina. The ferry takes less than 30 minutes. From there it's an easy drive to Catania. I've taken that ferry.

"Sketchy" has a negative connotation but I think is used in a variety of contexts. One might refer to a neighborhood as "sketchy" because of a perception that crime is a problem, for example. But "sketchy" for incomplete information seems to be closer to the original meaning. I'd take "sketchy ferry" to imply unreliability--plus perhaps other unfortunate characteristics. Gotta love English. I'm in France at the moment and find it fun to encounter French words we have co-opted and twisted to means something different.

I’m also traveling between Rome and Catania in October. Ferry sounded like fun - but decided too many hours. Instead, I’m flying Ryanair - 90 minute flight. Cheap.
