Anyone can recommend a good Italian-English dictionary for iPhone? it's best if it doesn't need data roaming or wifi.
I don't know of any dictionary for iphone, but you can find pocket size dictionary at the bookstores.
James, I'm not personally familiar with it but there is an Italian English application with iTunes. iSpeak Italian is the name of the app and it costs $1.99 to buy. You might want to give it a look-see.
Didn't find a dictionary, but I have an Italian translator on my iphone. There are ones for Spanish, Chinese, etc. It has common phrases for categories like Essentials, Travel, Accommodations, etc.
You pick the phrase, and it will say it out loud, so you can play it for someone to help you out, help them to understand what you need.
Not sure I'll use it on the next trip, but it's a good way for ME to learn some Italian, to keep practicing the simple questions we need to get around in the country.
The website off iTunes is lastminute.com. Or just search iTunes (as I'm sure you already have) for translators or Italian to find them all.
This app was free.
My wife has the I Speak Italian app. It is great, and it speaks the phrase back to you, but it requires wifi or data.
James,
There seems to be quite a few Language Translators available in the "Travel" category at the App's store, including some that "speak". I believe some of them require web access for complete functionality, so be sure to check the description carefully. I've also found that it's a good idea to check the Reviews (if there are any).
As you've indicated that "it's best if it doesn't need data roaming or wifi", I'm assuming you want a "stand alone" product. That's a good idea as the data roaming charges are steep!
Good luck and happy travels!
The best non-internet-requiring one that I've used so far is called WordRoll. I have it on my iTouch for Italian and German.
I like it because of the format. You start to type a word and it goes to that section of the "roll." You don't always have to finish typing the whole word before you get the one you want. You can also quickly glimpse at other similar words around it. I hope I described that clearly, because it is pretty neat when you use it. It might make more sense when you look at the screen shots in the app store.
The big ding against it is that it's not the most complete dictionary. I am thinking of springing the $24.99 for one dictionary with more words in it (95,000 entries versus 35,000 in WordRoll) and conjugations included, but I wish it had the same functionality of this program!
If I had to guess, I'd say 3 out of 5 times it has the word I'm looking for. That's plenty enough for me from a $2.99 app! The other 2 times, I make a new note with the word I need to learn and go translate it at home later on :D
Thank you for everyone's response. I decided to buy Word-roll translator since it's got better reviews at Apple store online than some of the other translators. We'll see how it turns out.
James, after reading the posts here, I also decided to try WordRoll on my I-Pod Touch. I downloaded the Italian and French versions yesterday afternoon, and so far these look really great! For only $2.99 each, I figured they were worth a try.
Some of the best features IMHO were:
these will function regardless of whether there's an internet connection or not.
the memory requirements were very reasonable - about 1.2 MB each.
ease of use and ability to search words either from FR/IT to English or vice versa.
Hopefully these app's will be useful on my upcoming trip to France and Italy. Along with the RPN Calculator that I downloaded from the App's Store, these might prove to be very useful!
Tamara, you should get a commission from the developers of WordRoll!
Cheers!
