Italian Coast stay near Rome

My wife and I would like to extend our Best of Europe tour that ends in Rome by spending an additional 3 nights to relax and unwind before returning home. We would like some suggestions on somewhere to go along the Mediterranean that would be easy to reach via train or bus and that would allow us to get back to the airport for a late morning flight the last day. The timing is mid June. Suggestions?

Friends rave about Sperlonga, a short train ride from Roma. We are not beach-goers, so have not made it there yet, but it is historical, too. I am not sure about returning by train in the AM to catch a flight. It might be worth looking at a private transfer. Research trains/transportations at Trenitalia.com or Rome2Rio.com.

I would recommend Terracina ( It has an old Greek Temple, which overlooks the city) or Gaeta (On one side of the peninsula sits an old monastery. Within the monastery is 'Grotto del Turco,' a beautiful grotto)
Both of them are worth a visit. They have nice beaches and you can reach them by Train.

I love Gaeta, I spent three nights there two summers ago. Another place, San Felice Circeo, has a nice beachfront but Gaeta has lots of history. Good regional/local food, too.

A worthwhile visit would be to go to Tarquinia Mare.
Tarquinia si a small city, around 60-70km from Rome easily accessible by train.
Tarquinia is divided between mare and city and is famous for its Etruscan tombs which is an outdoor visit in the fields. These tombs are painted just like the Egyptian pyramids and their design is similar to antique Greek paintings. It is + - 2000 years old. When I saw that I just thought it was fabulous! So I just felt I had to share it. There is also a small museum featuring extremely interesting Etruscan culture items.

There is a bus going from the station to the sea and to the city center.
The Etruscan sea is fantastic!
