Italian Coast

I am traveling to Italy for the first time in March with an organized tour group,etc.. During some free time I would like to see the coast, preferably somewhere near Rome since my free time will be in the area. I cannot find any suggestions for a beautiful coastline view. Any suggestions? Perhaps lunch or dinner with a view?

Depending on how much free time you have - there is a wonderful spot just north of Rome. It is north of Civitaveccio. I'm not sure of the name of the island (it is connected by land bridge) but two of the towns are Orbetello and Porto San Stefano. This island is incredibly beautiful!!! Not sure about bus service as we drove.

This may be something you can check out. Not far from the Rome airport is the town of Ostio di Lido (near Ostio Antica). We stayed there once before flying out the next morning (as opposed to going back into Rome for the night). It was 15 mins. by car from the airport. It's on the coast, has restaurants and hotels. You can ask the Italian tourist office if it has info on getting there from Rome, or check with the hotel you are staying in while in Rome.

Minor point. It's Ostia, not Ostio. That should help your Google searches. :-)

Use Google Earth to scan up and down the coastline looking for pictures that people have taken and posted. It's a pretty cool feature. Turn on the "Panoramio" feature under "Geographic Web" to see the photos. They appear as little camera icons.

There are a number of nice beaches south of Lido di Ostia, but they won't be very appealing in March. I agree that Lazio (the region containing Rome) isn't known for beautiful coastlines.

It looks like your best bet would be Orbetello (suggested above). Looks to be two hours one-way by train. I'm not sure you want to take that much time.
