Can anyone tell me the difference between purchasing a ticket "Train ticket + seat reservation" vs. "seat reservation only"?? Does this mean I can reserve a seat, then buy my ticket once I am there?
www.italiarail.com, like www.raileurope.com, are ticket brokers. They sell large quantities of Eurail passes. If you select "Seat Reservation Only", it assumes that you already have a rail pass. In Italy, you cannot reserve a seat and then buy the ticket when you get there.
The reason for the second box is that in Italy, there is a supplemental seat reservation fee on top of the cost of the railpass to ride the Eurostar-category and ICPLus-category trains. For the Eurostar, it's 18Euro. For the ICPLus, it's 3Euro.
For a bit more info, the P2P fare WITH seat reservations is 56.10Euro if you buy at the train station. Italiarail will sell you the same P2P ticket for 61.00Euro. If you buy the pass, you will pay for the pass plus 18Euro for the seat reservation.
Where else are you traveling by train in Italy. You really don't need a railpass there.
Larry - thank you for the information. In answer to your questions: I will be in Italy for 3 months (based in Rome) so I'll be traveling by Rail quite a lot, to as many places as my cash will allow. My daughter is coming for a week, and she wanted to see Milan - so that is why I was asking specifically for this one location.
Thank you for any other suggestions.
