We are taking the rail from Rome to Salerno. I've checked the Italia Rail website but can't seem to find how early we have to be at the rail staion before leaving. Similar to airport? 1 hour? 2 hours? We have assigned seats.
This is a perennial question asked by people who have never been on trains. It doesn’t say because a station is not an airport, there is no check-in, ticket check or anything. You don't have to be at the stations at all in advance. You just have to be on the train before it departs. That is your responsibility, nobody will check you are on the correct train, or stop you getting on the wrong train.
You just walk in off the street, glance at the departure board to find the correct platform, go to the correct platform, wait for the train and get one. Nobody will stop you, or ask you any questions. Your ticket will only be checked by the on board ticket inspector some time after the train starts moving.
I would say it would take a maximum of 10 minutes from the station entrance to your train, add a safety margin and arrive at the station at least 20 minutes before departure. Make it 30 minutes and you have time to get a sandwich and a drink.
Thank you!
