I understand ITA Airways is picky about carry-on luggage.
My backpack is the correct size specified for ITA , unpacked.
But will they measure it expanded with clothes? It can be squished down to correct size. LOL
Also, they specify 17.6 lbs for the luggage, but is there a weight requirement for the personal item? ( the backpack) Thank you
Before proceeding to the boarding gate, check the size and weight of your hand baggage with ITA Airways ground personnel or by placing it in one of the baggage measurers near the check-in desk. The hand baggage of passengers who fail to perform this check may not be accepted on board.
The ground crew will provide an “Under the seat” label for all small luggage (no larger than 36 cm (14.2") in height, 45 cm (17.7") in width and 20 cm(7.9") in depth) for all domestic and international ITA SpA flights for all destinations.
In order to ensure greater comfort on board and in compliance with safety standards, in the event of flights with a high load factor, your hand baggage may be collected at the boarding gate to be put in the hold. The airport staff will tag the baggage selected and issue the passenger with the receipt for baggage reclaim. This procedure is not followed for intercontinental flights.

Looks like you would submit your personal item for inspection in order to get the 'under the seat' tag.
I see no mention of a weight limit for the personal item, just the dimensional limits.

The measurement includes outer pockets, etc. so it will include any bulging from clothes packed.
From their site, the personal item is separate, but needs to meet the dimensions in the graphic to receive the permissible tag. Thanks for the reminder to measure my personal item tote!
