My carry-on luggage has the correct dimensions ,EXCEPT for the handles!
How strict is ITA Airways?
Flying from Rome to Florence. Will they let me check it at the last minute?

Why are you flying from Rome to Florence? Take the train instead and you won't have to worry about the luggage.

How strict depends on the gate personnel and if they are in a good mood or bad. I have seen it go both ways. Handles and wheels are included in the bag measurements so you do not have the correct dimensions. And that is not absolutely true about gate checking. I have seen them force a return to the check-in counter and they missed the plane. That was a Delta flight in Prague.

last fall we had a few flights on ITA. We never had a problem, and they never weighed anyone's baggage. But on one flight a few people had their luggage sent to the cargo hold as they showed their ticket to go onto the plane. It wasn't from a baggage sizer, just an eyeball judgement. Honestly their bags didn't look any larger than the ones people were carrying on so I don't know why they were singled out.
It might be prudent to put the stuff you absolutely would not want to lose in a bag inside your luggage in case for some reason they insist you check your bag. Then you can pull that out. We always do this even though we have carry-on sized bags, you just never know.

Does anyone know if the weight limit for the carry on includes your personal item like a handbag? For Air France, everything is included in the weight limit but I'm not sure about ITA.

The words and pictures are not entirely clear on ITA website but it would appear that only the "hand baggage" is weighed. Both the "hand baggage" and the "accessory of your choice" have to comply with size limits. But only the "hand baggage" shows any weight limit.
