Hi there! My husband, two kids and I are planning to fly to Rome this July. We are looking at several airlines and one of them is ITA Airways, which I know took over Alitalia. The flight would be from LAX to Rome and we would be booking through Delta, but the flight is operated by ITA. Has anyone flown them recently and if so, what was your experience? Would you recommend them? Thanks in advance.
Sorry I have no experience with the new ITA, however there are couple thing to check. On the Delta website you will be able see which flights are in Delta planes and what model plane is on that leg by clicking on “details”. If you like upgraded seats the ITA may not offer them. Check what terminal you arrive at and what terminal your next leg depart from. If you are a Delta points collector you may not get points for the iTA leg. Check seat configurations on https://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Delta_Airlines/information.php
Think about your priorities:cost, comfort, convenience?
If you are not a dedicated Delta member I often use Google Flights to see the many options you have. Then book directly on their website.
I personal preference is take the longest flight first (to start adjusting to time zone change)
Hope this helps.
Personal feedback is likely going to be hard to come by. ITA has existed only since mid-October, with US flights having started in Nov. That makes for a relatively small pool of people to have used them AND be a participant in this forum.
The planes are most likely the Alitalia fleet, with new paint on the outside.
Same airplanes as Alitalia. Not even sure they have all been repainted with the new ITA livery yet.
The staff hired by ITA are all former Alitalia employees.
Basically only the executive team is new. Everything else is from Alitalia. They probably recycled the uniforms too.
Thanks everyone for your feedback! I never flew Alitalia in the past so I wasn’t sure how they were before they were taken over by ITA. Appreciate the additional tips for Seat Guru and Google Flights! Based on general reviews online, it seems customer service is not very good with ITA so I will probably not fly them for now. Thanks again!
I know Alitalia didn’t have a stellar reputation for customer service, but the new ITA company CEO, Mr. Alfredo Altavilla would like you to reconsider your decision not to try ITA and sent this message: https://youtu.be/-crgQGdpZR0
Bravo Roberto-- never seen you in better form
You should assume ITA is just Alitalia with new lipstick and Google accordingly
LOL Roberto! Thanks for the chuckle!! Love ABBA and all their songs used in Mamma Mia! Appreciate everyone's feedback as always!
ITA is the past participle of the Latin verb IRE (to go) therefore ITA literally means GONE!
So in consideration of the “nomen omen” I would purchase that flight from Delta (which is a codeshare partner on SkyTeam). You never know for how long ITA will be around before it’s “gone!”
Roberto di Firenze is giving great advice. The line in the Abba Song "when I'm alone with you", is what might happen to your money if you buy a ticket with them instead of Delta. There is a long post on this forum about people who have been unable to get their money back from Alitalia.
Hi Lanialli,
I have no experience yet flying, but I just purchased tickets on ITA to fly from Rome to Athens. Regarding a previous posters comment about the points accumulated, when I was entering the information, it asked for loyalty program, and there was the option to specifically put in your sky miles number. So I would think if purchasing through Delta, you would definitely accumulate the points.
Also, if you search the forum, you will find I asked this question 1-2 months ago. Some people shared positive experiences.
Thank you @tmalave! I hope you have a good experience with them this summer. I still haven't booked my flights yet but plan to either book Delta (operated by ITA) or United. It all depends on pricing and schedules at this time. Thank you all!

I honestly can't see how that is relevant. Unlike previous bankrupcies, ITA is not just a new version of Alitalia. It is a new company that has no formal ties to Alitalia. Although I guess that most of staff previously worked at Alitalia. And they have taken over many of their planes, but they also have new planes on order and will probably start replacing the old Alitalia planes soon.
Ditto to what Badger in Sweden said. As he said about new planes- Under Alitalia you would be flying a Boeing 777(an old plane). ITA has commited to an all Airbusse fleet so now you will be on an Airbus 330. My wife and I are booked on Delta to Italy in 2 weeks operated by ITA and they changed the time slightly and the seating due to the Airbusse 330. I guess we will see. Also, ITA does not plan to fly out of California till summer(just New York for now); and ITA is being bid on by a partnership of Lufthansa and Swiss cruise giant MSC so it might be instead operated by KLM or Air France by the time you fly. That is the up to date info, now you decide what is good for you.
If Lufthansa purchases a stake in ITA, then it is likely that ITA will become a code partner with LH (in the Star Alliance team). Therefore if you purchase from Delta, Delta would probably change your itinerary.
If flying from SFO, then the Star Alliance has a lot of choices (United, Lufthansa, Swiss, SAS).
I could not find on the ITA site what their fleet composition is. This site does show it to be airbus planes averaging 15 yrs old

Seatguru does not have ITA listed yet and has not deleted Alitalia
All aircrafts in service as of today were taken over from Alitalia and they are all Airbus.
They have new ones on order but not yet delivered.
Since the LAX-FCO starts in summer, maybe that might be done on one of the new planes ordered (A330-900 or A350-900), but for now they are flying their old A330-200 (formerly Alitalia) to North-America. Not sure if they've been repainted with the new livery yet.
I've booked my flight via Delta from Miami to Rome in October, and am confirmed on the new A330-900neo airbus, on ITA. Everything about the booking has been smooth and there are a few youtube reviews showing up. I'm eager to see what business class looks like on the new airbus! I'll be sure to come back here and let y'all know, once I'm home. Keep your fingers crossed for me...
I flew from JFK to Malpensa (and return) on ITA in June. I chose it over the Delta flight because it used the Airbus 330 which had a seating configuration of two seats, four seats, two seats. We felt more comfortable, given Covid, not sitting three across. Both flights were fine and were without issue. Both were delayed approximately 40 and 30 minutes, respectively. However many other flights, including the Delta flight to JFK which left Malpensa shortly before our flight, were cancelled outright. We were satisfied with the flight and would fly ITA again. We didn't take our masks off at all on either flight, so I can't speak to the food.
I can only speak to ITA flights in Italy, but our 2 flights were great. I’m not sure we filled out the required online paperwork correctly since there were still COVID protocols, but it sure functioned better than British Airways and we got what we needed for the flight. Check in staff was great, although they did weigh our bags and we were, as we figured, over their carry-on weight limit for domestic flights. We had booked accordingly. Their lounge at FCO was wonderful. Their flight attendants were impressively professional and because masks were still required they were insistent that everyone was properly masked.
FWIW, we flew our final leg from Rome to Palermo, Sicily and a flight from Catania, Sicily to Rome on ITA. Both flights were short hops but we had no issues with the airline.
