Istanbul & Northern Italy

Ok travellers!

So my friend is moving to a little town outside of Milan next year. I'm going with her to help her move (from the US) but we both decided to hit Istanbul for a few days before we hit Italy. Since I will only have 2 1/2 weeks - what itinerary would you suggest for Northern Italy?

I would think we would spend maybe 4 days in Istanbul and then 12 days for Northern Italy. Cinque Terra would be a must hit for sure. Any other towns we should hit?

Thanks in advance!

Please be gentle with Italy! Will she be able to travel without too much concern for oversized luggage packed with last-minute items?

Carry on only. We both dont shop and she is getting rid of almost everything she owns here. I must be one of the very rare chicks who doesnt shop when I travel. All my money goes to food and tours.

What time of year? The Cinque Terra may not be ideal, depending. Same applies to the lakes. Venice and Florence for sure. Verona is one of my favorites. Spend a few days in Bologna and day trip to Padua, Ferrara, Ravenna (the mosaics are a WOW). There are so many options. What are your interests?

Going mid-march to end of march. Interests? beautiful scenery, cool people, amazing food, and history.

With 12 days (and sticking to the north) I would split my time evenly ...
Venice (3 nights)
Florence (3 nights)
Cinque Terre (3 nights)
Milan and the Lakes (3 nights)

or, if you don't want Florence ...

Venice (3 nights)
Verona (2 nights)
Bologna (2 nights)
Cinque Terre (2 nights)
Milan and the Lakes (3 nights)
