Isle of Capri/Blue Grotto

I am looking for pros and cons regarding the Isle of Capri. We will be staying in Positano for several days in early October and are trying to decide if the Blue Grotto and a day trip to Capri is worth it. Also how long the trip would be.

If I had a friend planning several days in Positano, I'd definitely recommend that they spend a day on Capri - whether or not they chose to see the blue grotto. Just go to www.capri.com for ideas about things to do.

You hop on a Capri boat in the morning - down at the Positano waterfront - and you can have a full day on Capri and be back in Positano by early evening.

I might add that the blue grotto tour is not a great idea for anyone that's prone to get seasick - there can be a lot of bobbing up and down while you wait your turn to enter.

I absolutely loved the day trip we took to Capri. We arrived at the dock, took the mini-bus up to Anacapri where we continued to the top of Mount Solaro via the chairlift. Magnificent views. Then we walked back down the mountain, spent a little time in town, and did some general "bumming around."

Later in the day we headed back down to the dock in advance of the ferry leaving and had plenty of time for a glass of limoncello along the waterfront. I re-live this travel day often in my head, and it was 3 years ago!

So yes, I agree that if you have the time (and it sounds as though you do), take advantage of a nice day on your trip and head over to Capri.

I loved Capri. But be aware it is over-run by tourists in the summer (hopefully October is better). If your going to the Blue Grotto, do exactly as Rick says in his guidebook. GET THERE EARLY. Or be prepared to wait. The Grotto is roughly the cost of a gondola ride in Venice, expensive but memorable. Allow a half day for Capri & the Grotta Azzura.

It is worth seeing the one time, but the line can be long so the wait to do it can be as well. Quite memorable once you are inside, however.

We spent the night on Capri, and as any highly touristy place, it is so much better after the day trippers have left. Anyone who has spent the night in the Cinque Terre, Orvieto, or Siena can tell you that once the sun goes down and it clears out, you can realyze why people flock to the place.

As mentioned, definitely plan to take the chair lift to the top of Capri for the views. That was a cool ride as well. Takes about ten minutes - maybe more, but you get a chair by yourself and you fly over the island for a fun experience.

Day trip to Capri, absolutely worth it. Anacapri was so beautiful, above the complete touristy area. Blue Grotto...felt like I was in Disney, was pretty but silly and not worth the money.

A day trip to Capri is certainly worth it whether you do the Blue Grotto or not. The day we were there the Grotto was closed because the water was too choppy - and that can happen quite easily. We still had a great day! Took a 2 hour boat tour around the island instead. There are several guys approaching tourists coming from the ferry and they offer their boat services. We paid 90 Euro for the 4 of us and it was one of our best days. We even got to see little grottos along the way.
