Anybody out there famiiar with the Island of Ischia out of the port of Naples? Looks wonderful.
I have enquired about this island myself on this board previously with no response. My research showed it is mainly spa/beach type vacationing.
Well, I have been reading about the place from an article in the Nat. Geographic Traveler magazine and it sounds like a beautiful place to visit. I just wanted some reaction and feedback from the RS posters here on the Helpline. Thanks for your response though.
Maybe check out the Tripadvisor Ischia forum, seems to be at least somewhat active and populated by at least one person who lives there.
It's been many years since I've been there. Ischia is more laid back compared to it's sister island of Capri. As the other poster mentioned, it's more just beaches and resorts versus more tourist attractions found on Capri. But if that's your thing, it can be more pleasant than Capri.
I posted this same question last year. I had looked at Ischia on Google Earth. It does look wonderful. From what I understand, it's a very popular vacation destination for Italians, not many American tourists.
I visited Ischia with my family in September 2008. It was a very pleasant trip, but I never felt compelled to go back. It's most often compared to Capri, since they're near each other, but I think Capri has more natural beauty, especially once you get off the beaten path. Having said that, we loved Citara Beach in Ischia near Forio. And Forio itself was a cute town with some good restaurants.
Ischia is very popular with German tourists. Most signs and menus that elsewhere in Italy are in Italian and English were in Italian and German.
It's a nice place to go. I just don't think I'd choose it instead of Sorrento or Capri.
Thank you all for the input on this island. My goal would be to go back to Rome for 4 or 5 days and then relax in a nice soaking spa for a couple of days before heading further south. I am in the very early stages of planning my second trip to Italy. This last May I explored Tuscany, Umbria and the CT. Now I am ready for Southern Italy. Ciao!
