We are trying to decide whether to stay in Ischia or Sorrento on our next trip. I would prefer to stay away from overpriced touristy areas. Is Sorrento worth it? It seems to me the nearby Piano di Sorrento might be a better place to stay in that area. More of a work a day type of town. Ischia looks to me every bit as beautiful, but with less tourists. On our first trip to Italy we almost never went to Venice because we heard it was over run with tourists. It couldn't have been more wonderful. We stayed in the Canneriggio neighborhood and loved it.
I haven't been to Ischia, but Sorrento is absolutely wonderful. It's one of the few places that has figured out how to do "touristy" the right way. (After all, you will be a tourist.)
I hear Ischia is really for a lazy spa or laying around. Sorrento I can vouch for is terrific, fun, a happy place, action or no action, itis terrific. and the food is great . I hope I can go back someday.
Stay in Sorrento over Ischia, it has better transportation options for day trips.
In response to the 'Over priced touristy areas' no one seemed to mention Sorrento is very touristic & over priced but at the same time the Amalfi Coast is absolutely beautiful. I would suggest to look into another city along the coast rather than Sorrento. The coast line is very stunning as Sorrento is blah compared to Ravello or Positano. But depending on your interests.
We stayed in Massa Lubrense - fabulous village just past Sorrento.
Sally does that city have access to the coastal waters?
Yes Joey. It is a fishing village!
