Ischia or Capri

I will be in Naples in early July. I have one day to tour either Ischia or Capri. I've heard so much about the "blue grotto" and would love to see it, but I do not want to be sardined on the island. Do I skip Capri and go over to the less Traveled and yet just as beautiful Ischia? Please let me know your experiences.

Skip Capri, in July, it will be like two sardine cans crammed into one. I've been to Capri twice, once as a day trip and once overnight. Have been to Ischia the same way. It's a much larger island, has great food, nice beaches, and spas. The towns are spread out enough that while it's crowded by the main port, it's fairly easy to escape by bus or Ape to another town. More info below. It also has many more ferry connections.

The grotto is one of the lesser reasons I'd go to Capri so look at Ischia if there's nothing else on the island that's of interest to you. We spent 2 days on Capri, did some fun hiking, skipped the grotto entirely, and didn't feel like we'd missed a thing. IMHO, it's an expensive and time-consuming pain in the rear for the little bit of time you actually get in the thing. That's assuming the tides/sea action is conducive to the rowboats even getting in.

We did the Blue Grotto and loved it, our boatman sang "O solamia."

We loved Capri and Sorrento, also the Amalfi Coast.

I have not been to Ischia, so I can't compare the two. But Capri is beautiful: the hikes, the food, the blue water. I definitively want to go back.
