Ischia, Italy

We are putting together a trip to Italy which will include a good amount of time in Sorrento. If we want to include Ischia, is a day trip sufficient or should we try to stay a night or two? I am also trying to figure out where to stay. We woud be more interested in the natural thermal springs. Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you want a relaxing couple of days, stay a night or two. Ischia is also an easy day trip. Look for hotels with thermal spa facilities, compare the ones that you like. I've only visited Ischia as a daytrip, it's the antidote to Capri, very relaxed and not crowded (most of the time).

There are day tours that you can book to tour all 5 main towns and top sights. However, for a laid back Island this seems really busy. You could also book a boat day tour to see the island from the water, they leave from many locations including Ischia (see the tourism information office in Ischia when you arrive). The charm of Ischia is also about relaxing not to mention that it can be very hard to find someone who speaks English (they do often speak German though). So if you only have a day... You may enjoy your day more if you see the sights in Ischia Ponte, such as the castle, take in a relaxing lunch and then enjoy the beach of Cartaromana in the afternoon, before taking a ferry back to Sorrento. This beach is located between Castello Aragonese and the Sant’Anna cliffs. The beach also offers one of the best views of the island. Cartaromana is well-known for its natural hot thermal water springs that spill out onto the shore. However, if you have the time to stay a night or two then you could utilize the buses and/or day tours to cover the rest of the Island. Here are some restaurant recommendations in Ischia Ponte:

Emiddio's Ischia Porto, lungomare. Right down the street from the ferries embarkations. Excellent food, generous portions, rapid service, reasonable prices.

Ristorante Alberto, Via C. Colombo, 8 Ischia. The list of celebrities that have dined at the Ristorante Alberto includes names like Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Moss and Natasha Stefanenko. The restaurant's walls are simply huge windows, which emphasizes its location - directly on the beach. From indoors, the restaurant seems to be floating. Since 1950, the Ristorante Alberto has served the finest quality of seafood dishes, concentrating on flavor, freshness and appearance.
I hope this helps you plan your visit to Ischia!
