Hi -
I've scheduled two nights on Ischia & then two in Sorrento, but should I stay on Capri or somewhere on the coast instead of Ischia?
These four days are toward the end of an 18 day trip. I thought I would need a little down time.
Thoughts?
Hard to answer without knowing what characteristics of each place appeal to you, and why you're reconsidering Ischia after you have already scheduled it. Is it simply because Capri is better known and more intensely marketed? (there's a downside to that in spite of its beauty - i.e. massive tourist crowds) Or no one you know has heard of Ischia and that has you wondering if it's better elsewhere?
For what it's worth, each option is slightly different but I doubt would be less enjoyable...and one is as good as another for "downtime"...just depends on what you're looking for. Read up, note the differences, and one of them will likely have more "pull" and help you decide how to allocate your time. Without knowing your preferences (or what you want to do or see in each place), it's really hard to give proper advice. Good luck!
This is as subjective as this forum, but maybe it will help:

It is a trade off. Staying just one night on Ischia is a logistical bummer and you'll loose vacation time schlepping your luggage and waiting for the ferry. You can take day trips to both Ischia and Capri from Sorrento.
I lean toward staying in Sorrento the whole time and using it as your base camp for day trips: the islands, Positano/Amalfi, Pompeii, Naples, Salerno, Paestum, etc Using a base camp is far less of a hassle.
Here is my 4.5 days using Sorrento as a base.
Day 7 Thursday 10/13: Day-Naples, Evening-Sorrento
Day 8 Friday 10/14: Positano/Amalfi/Ravello
Day 9 Saturday 10/15: Paestum/Salerno
Day 10 Sunday 10/16: Capri day tour, Sorrento in the evening
Day 10 Monday 10/17: Pompeii/Sorrento
