Is Turin worth a visit?

We are going back to the Piedmont in June 2011. Is Turin worth a visit while we are there?

I have not been to Turin, but after doing some research we planned our trip to Piedmont this September to specifically end in Turin so we could have a day to see the sights and go to Eataly - but we are really into food and wine!

We went through Turin a few years ago on our way to Bellagio. Turin has a couple of mildly interesting museums - the national cinema museum and the egypt museum. It also has the cathedral which houses the Shroud of Turin (which is not on public display). That's about it.

I spent 4 days in Turin in April when the Shroud was on public display and was surprised how much I liked the city. I didn't get to any museums because the lines were very long when I was there because of Cultural Week and free admissions. Instead, I walked around and enjoyed the feeling of the city. The tourist office has several nice books for free describing walks around the city or different themes in the "Royal City". I liked the wide streets and the porticos. One night I walked up to Monte dei Cappuccini to watch the sunset over the city.

What about the great looking park on the Po river with the Borgo Medieovale? It looks fantastic on Google Earth. There's also that little cafe, Bar Al Bicerin, that was featured on TV during the Olympics that serves an ultra thick cup of hot chocolate. Maybe two reasons?

I have been to Torino and feel that if it is along your route and you wish to see the Egyptian museum or to see the Shroud of Turin (only open to public every 10 yrs)then yes. Otherwise I believe your time is better spent elsewhere. It is a big city w/ lots of traffic and not easy to park in with few sights. Hope this helps alittle.

We have made it a point to take out of town visitors on day trips to Turin, and they have been as enthusiastic about it as we have.
So in a word, yes.
