Is Trastevere a good place to stay while visiting Rome?

My family of 4 adults (kids ages 19 and 22) will be in Rome in early July for 3 to 3.5 days.

We are hoping to rent an apartment and are looking for a location that is safe, convenient to the main attractions, and has interesting shops and restaurants nearby.

We plan to visit the main attractions (Vatican, Colesium, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc.). Also want to explore/shop areas that are reasonably priced and "artsy" (bookstores, vintage, etc.) Not interested in the upscale designer shopping.
For example, we loved the Latin Quarter in Paris with all the little narrow streets and shops tucked in everywhere you turned.

From what I've read, Trastevere sounds like a possibility, and I'm hoping to see if I'm on the right track or if there are other areas I should be looking into.
I'm wondering how easy it is to get to the main attractions from Trastevere and if there is enough to do in the immediate area.

Thanks for any help.

I stayed in Trastevere last summer and I had no problem getting to everything that I wanted to see. It was very easy to take a bus or tram to get across the water. For me an added plus was running along the river which was preferable to the streets although I did that also. The Sunday flea market in Trastevere was a lot of fun. I also took a cooking class in Trastevere. This was my second trip to Rome the prior year I stayed near Termini.

Yes. The quaintest in Rome IMO. If you liked the Latin Quarter, you will find Trastevere to be similar. The Centro Storico is across the river and it's served by buses and trams.

I think it depends on how close you want to be to the action. Trastevere is nice quiet, little off the beaten path, area to stay with some decent restaurants. Look on the map and you will see what I mean. You can use public transit to get to most of the sites but you have to use transportation. There other areas that would be more convenient and a little more exciting for the 19 and 22 year old.

My favorite location to stay is around Piazza Navona/Campo de Fiori but I think Trastevere is a good alternative. Some people on this board recommend hotels near Termini but I personally wouldn't stay in that area - I think Trastevere sounds like a better fit for what you're interested in.

Trastevere has a lot of action in the evening. Because of the many restaurants and cafés. During the day is a quieter working neighborhood. The Centro Storico is vibrant and full of people, but the hotel prices are more "vibrant" too.

My husband and I stayed there 2 1/2 years ago and.loved.it. I initially started looking around Campo de Fiore, etc., but didn't want to hear music and restaurant noises all evening. Our apt was extremetly quiet; just what we wanted. Tram 8 takes you to most anywhere you want to go (Rome is much more a walking city than a metro-type city). No Crowds! Lots of good restaurants, and 'regular neighborhood-type' shopping. Heck, even the few touristy shops near Santa Maria in Trastevere were slightly more upscale. You will definitely notice the difference between the feel of Trastevere and 'Central Rome'.

Any good guidebook is going to list several 'attractions' in Trastevere, the main one being that you can escape the tourist crush, and again it's just a short tram ride to 'Tourist Rome' - Forum, etc.

Thanks to everyone for all of the input!

Can't wait to get to Rome and see all of this for ourselves.

We got an apartment in Trastevere for a week. It was a fantastic place to be. I did the due diligence, looking at the Google Map Street View images around the apartment, which was on Vicolo de Renzi. Unfortunately those images were not taken at 2am. It was party central in the outdoor bars right outside the apartment, all night, every night.

I loved staying there and would do it again. We just got a bit unlucky in our location. Do your homework!

I stayed in Trastevere for 3 nights a couple years ago. I lucked out finding this apartment on craigslist but since then Lamberto (owner) has put the apartment on homeaway and vhbo. I would rate this apartment and experience with the owner a 10! The apartment is reasonable priced and the owner was very helpful with advice and recommendations to restaurants. He met us at the apartment to check us in right on time. The apartment is 2 bedroom... perfect for a family of 4 (king bed in one room, two twins in another)! Every morning there is a outdoor market right below the apartment in the square. Here's the direct website http://www.apartment19.it/theneighborhood.html You can also find it here and you can read all the wonderful reviews. http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p300175
