Have our first Italy trip planned for September. We are taking a cruise around the country but have that sandwiched between Venice and Bologna/Modena. Our cruise leaves from Genoa. Our plan is to enjoy 2 days in Venice at the beginning of the trip, then take the train from Venice to Genoa. At the conclusion of our cruise, we plan on taking the train from Genoa to Bologna. We have just that one day to explore either Bologna or take a train to Modena for the afternoon and back to Bologna for dinner. The whole Modena idea revolves around the Enzo Ferrari museum. Our flight leaves early the next morning. Are these train pieces doable? Is an afternoon in Modena worth it? Is just dinner in Bologna worth it? These are the things I need to know. :-) Thanks in advance!
Hard to say what is “worth it” to you
Train from Venice to Genoa is about 4.5 hours
What time will you board ship?
Train from Genoa to Bologna is about 3.5
You will pass Modena before you get to Bologna, but I am assuming you have lots of luggage?
IMO it’s a lot of travel time with few short hours in location
Maybe this isn’t the trip to add these places?
Where are you flying home from?
We don't board the ship until the following day, so we will have an afternoon to get a taste of Genoa.
You are correct that we will have luggage. The plan was to check in to our hotel in Bologna, store our luggage, and go to Modena.
We fly out of Bologna the next morning.
Oooh, don't mention "taste of Genoa" to me because I start thinking of all the great food we had there! I can look up some of the places we ate in Genoa, but the one I don't have to look up, because it was my favorite, was Sa Pesta ( Via dei Giustiniani, 16/R). It's a bit like indoor street food, considered too expensive for what it is by some reviewers, but my husband and I loved the casual atmosphere, watching the cooks, the whole menu, and what we actually ate: both of the house antipasti which were various savory pies, little vegetable thingies, and farinata. Also we had pasta next, which was also good but not as new and different to us.
