Is this doable?

After years of talking about it, my husband has finally said he would go to Italy with me (he also agreed to enjoy it! He doesn't like to travel). Italy is a dream destination for me. I am considering the Venice,Florence,Rome tour. The only city that won't be covered is Assisi which I would like to see. Question: is it doable to fly to Assisi before the tour (not sure where the closest airport is at this point), and then take a train to Venice to begin the tour?
Also, will this particular tour touch on any part of the Tuscany area?

Florence is in the region of Tuscany. There is an airport near Assisi (located in the region of Umbria next to Tuscany) but the service there is very limited only a few flights a week from London Stansted Airport.

If you want to go to Assisi my advice would be to fly into Rome days before the tour and just take the train there stay a couple of nights and then to the city where your tour begins. Even better if the tour begins in Venice.

So all you would need is to buy a round trip plane ticket to Rome and then a train ticket to Assisi and then a train ticket to Venice

If your plans allow it, you could also consider doing Assisi after the tour, when you will have had an introduction to Italy and perhaps a bit more confidence of traveling on your own. Also, Assisi is closer to Rome than it is to Venice.

There are direct trains between Rome and Assisi that take 2-2.5 hours. The train from Assisi to Venice takes over 5 hours and you have to change trains. So it makes the most sense to fly into Venice . . at least one day before the tour to get over jetlag. Or you could fly into Milan and take the train to Venice - it's worth checking for better flight schedules or prices. The tour ends in the morning. Take a train to Assisi in the morning for 1-2 nights, then back to Rome for your last night. It's too far to plan to go from Assisi to the Roma airport. You may also want to spend a couple more nights in Rome before home - there's so much to see and do in Rome. To make it easier to travel to Assisi, leave most of your luggage at your Rome hotel and take an overnight bag to Assisi.
