We ware celebrating our 30th anniversary in Italy. After 5 days in Rome we plan to train it up to Florence. Would it it be nuts to try to leave Rome in the AM, stop in Orvieto (with carry-on type luggage) spend several hours there, then late afternoon take a train to Florence to spend several more days there?
Thanks!!!!
Sure it can be done. It will be a bit hectic but it actually sounds like fun!!!!
Thanks Mark....
We need the encouragement... any ideas are welcome.
Not sure if we should do the "easy going day" or the " we'll never forget it" day!
Thanks again.
I think it's doable. We will be leaving Rome next month & taking the train to Orvieto w/ luggage in tow. We will leave the luggage at the rental car agency & sightsee in Orvieto all day & then at the end of the day (around 4-5pm) we will pick up the rental car & drive to Siena where we will be staying for 5 days. I don't think your plan is crazy at all.
Definitely doable, as long as you understand that you'll only get a glimpse of Orvieto. I would focus on the Duomo and just enjoy strolling around the town and having lunch, and maybe one or two other sites as you like/have time. Don't try to see everything Orvieto has to offer--keep it relaxed.
Congratulations on 30 years!
Love it! It's one day, a travel day, anyway, and as you said, it's a day you'll NEVER forget! We had breakfast in Monterosso, lunch in Milano, and dinner in Venezia once, and while the pace was hectic, it made us feel like jet-setters, and broke up a long train ride. Baggage storage & movement is the only headache, really, even with just carryons, so make sure the Orvieto storage spot is open upon your arrival.
That's pretty much what we did last year. We left Rome around noon (we waited to pick up the car till after rush hour) to go to an agriturismo in Tuscany and stopped in Orvieto to walk around and have a gelato. It made for a less stressful day as the car ride didn't feel too long this way. And we couldn't check in at the agriturismo before 4 pm anyways so this was the perfect way to pass the time. If you take the train this is really easy as the furnicular takes you into the hill town right at the train station of Orvieto.
There is a great restaurant in Orvieto--I Sette Consoli that would be perfect for an anniversary lunch. Garden dining is available in good weather.
Sounds great-and doable!
If I plan to arrive in the evening, I always let my B&B/hotel know so they have someone available and, more importantly, don't give away my room.
Thanks everyone.....I love this board!!!!
