Is This Charge For Arriving Late Common?

I have found such cheap airfare to get my family and me to Venice from Geneva, but the flight gets in at 20:55. There was no other flight that I could get for 25$ pp.
The apartment owner that we are renting from has said that is fine, but is charging us 20 Euro for late arrival. This is normal?
And arriving that late in Venice? Things are just as safe there as any other city, right?

Yes, this is common with apartment owners. A late arrival is not very convenient because it disturbs the owner at a late hour when he/she could be settling in for the night. A late arrival fee is used to discourage this. Hotels don't charge a late arrival fee because they are normally staffed until late in the evening. Yes, the city is safe this late at night.

Thanks, Jackie. I figured it was common. I wish I didn't have to disturb the owners, but we'd rather fly there than spent the day on the train.

I have to disagree about Venice being as safe as any other city - It's safer, by far. Why? One reason is that it's so hard to make a quick getaway. You can't just hop on a Vespa and disappear. (^_^)

Venice is particularly beautiful after dark, when the bulk of the daytripping/cruise-shipping tourists are gone. Here are some evening photos I took when we were there in 2013, if you want to see what I mean:

Wow, Michael, those pictures are magical! I am incredibly excited to see Venice at night.
What is the average sunset time during the summer, in the month of June?

The sunset in Venice starts at 8:51pm on June 1 and at 9:03pm at the end of June.

The historical center of Venice is the safest of all Italian cities, probably because of the reasons mentioned above. It's hard to get away.

Although many years ago a bank was robbed by a gang of bank robbers on...believe it or not.....bicycles. It made the news nationwide. In another occasion, in 1978, a famous Venetian robber nicknamed Kochiss, was killed by police in a fire exchange after a bank robbery next to Piazza San Marco. The runaway vehicle on that occasion was a wooden boat, which was intercepted by the much faster police high speed boats along the canals. Both could have been excellent scripts for a Hollywood movie.
