Is there luggage storage at the train stations?

Hi,
We will be in Italy traveling and there are a couple days that are a bit longer when moving from say Florence to Sorrento. If we want to hop off in say Siena could we store our luggage and grab a bite to eat and then hop back on?

Most big-city train stations in Italy have bag storage offices and most smaller town stations do not. Some private bag storage facilities are also up-and-coming in Europe.

Note that most train tickets in Italy are purchased and reserved for specific trains, so any "hopping off" should be planned in advance. Only regional trains are really conducive to a last-minute change of plan.

Rebekah,

Many of the large train stations do offer left luggage facilities, however, if you book a train ticket from Florence to Naples, and you want to stop in Rome for a couple of hours to eat lunch, or whatever, then you’d need to buy separate tickets; Florence to Rome, and Rome to Naples.

Siena is not on the main train route between Florence and Naples, it is a substantial detour off the main line. You could do it, but you would need to buy a ticket from Florence to Siena, then a ticket from there to Naples. But a bus is the best way from Florence to Siena anyway. Mainline trains all have seat reservations, so as soon as you hop off, your ticket and reservation is no longer valid for any other trains. Nowadays, they work just like airlines. Besides, if you buy a ticket for a fast train from Florence to Naples, it will only make 2 stops on the way, Rome Tiburtina and Rome Termini.

Siena is one train station that doesn't store bags, so Rick's Italy 2020 book recommends storing them at Piazza Gramsci, which would the end point of a bus from either the Siena train station or directly from Florence.

I'd rather have more time in Siena, so wouldn't really recommend the plan. Train connections from Siena to Naples take 5 hours, usually with a connection back in Florence SMN station (which does store bags), and then you have another about another hour to reach Sorrento.

Florence to Sorrento - are you staying in Sorrento? On another post you said you were staying in one of the AC towns. Did you change that? The fast way to Sorrento is the high speed train to Naples (3 hours) which does not stop in Siena. It only stops in Rome. You cannot get off a high speed train at an intermediate stop and continue with the same ticket on another train. Each seat is reserved. You can bring your own food on the train or buy food in the refreshments car (mostly coffee, cold drinks, pastries, sandwiches and such). In Naples you will need to go through the train station down to the Circumvesuviana train. Allow 10-15 minutes to get through the station. The trains run about every 30 minutes and take 1 to 1.30 hours to Sorrento. The trains sometimes run late.

Chani,

I may do some switching of my travel and stay in Florence a little longer in which case maybe a day trip. So thank you for that. However I am still going to amalfi coast but I am going from florence to Positano. Do you think the fast train to naples and then what after that to get to positano??

Thank you,
