We are going from Rome to Venice. We would love to be able to stop at Florence for about six hours and check it out. We will have two pieces of luggage and two back packs. Is there a place to store luggage in the railroad station or similar?

yes, their is checked luggage at the Florence train station. Look for the sign that says "Deposito Bagaglia"

When I search for left luggage at Florence RR station I find this:
Many services, including two internet points, are located within the station. You can stash you luggage at the left luggage facility on the ground floor.
Cost is € 3.80 for the first 5 hours and € 0.60 for each additional hour from the 6th-12th.

€4 for 5 hours, then 60 cents per hour extra.
