We are flying into Venice and haven't decided to stay two or three nights before heading to Rome. Is it worth it to train from Venice, stopping somewhere small and charming for a night en route to Rome? I would love some small country town. Not necessarily Florence since we are already doing two major cites. Thanks!
If the choice means leaving Venice with only two nights and one of those is arival day, then I would say not worth it. the time would be better spent in Venice.
But lots of folks would argue with me.
A popular choice would probably be Orvieto. but evry time you move location you'll burn about half a day in packing, checking out traveling and then checking in again. So in reality you'll have maybe an afternoon and evening and a bit of the next morning in Orvieto.
Your call.
Other options would be Padua and Siena. Padua is close to Venice, so you loose little time in transit, and you can catch the high speed train from there directly to Rome. Siena is a slight detour, but is very charming. Both are larger than Orvieto (which would also be a great choice), but much smaller than Venice and Rome.
With absolutely no knowledge of how public transportation works for getting there, Perugia is an all-time great place that is sadly neglected.
