I have Rick Steves 2009 Italy book and was studying the metro system. Then I went on line to find a Metro map and found that there was an additional stop between Ottaviano and Musei Vaticani called St. Pietro. It would be very close to where we are staying. Does anyone know about this stop? Is it new?
San Pietro is a railway station, not a metro stop.
The san pietro train station is where many cruise ship passengers come to the Vatican as it connects easily to Civitavecchia. This is not a helpful transport connection for most of us.
Yes, St. Pietro is a rail station, but it is part of the larger Rome Metro system that would include the undergrounds, the trams, buses, and the trains. I would compare locations on Google maps rather than a metro map to determine if St. Pietro is closer to where you want to be, but if you are arriving at Termini or the Airport(FCO) then you could take the train to San Pietro using the same 1 euro metro ticket (correction: from the airport there is cost additional to the 1 euro metro ticket). From Termini, just find the train going to that station, likely way out on the tracks for local lines. From the Airport, skip the Leonardo express, take the FM1 train (about 5.50 euro) to Trastevere Station, then switch to the train to St. Pietro.(either the FM3 or FM5) From Termini, it may be a longer trip over the underground, from the Airport, you are probably saving both time and money over the express then the underground.
Thanks for the replies. I looked at Google map and there's the red M right by where we are staying. So I understand that refers to a rail station, not a metro stop. Can I take the Metro to Ottaviano (sp?) and transfer to S. Peitro? Thnaks for all your help.
Susan, St Pietro IS a metro stop - it will be eagerly awaiting your arrival when it's scheduled (HA!) to open in Dec 2018...;-). I believe you're planning on traveling sooner than that, though. For fun, AND for the official site (in Italian, although everything that I've let Google translate for me has been in "English-speakers" English...):.........http://www.romametropolitane.it/.........You'll have to translate each page as it loads, but that takes 3 seconds and gives a lot of info.************FWIW, never assume anything you see on Google Maps is definitely correct; someone with a Google account finally got the Santa Lucia train station moved out of the rental car parking garage at Piazzale Roma...8^/............Also, if you click on the 'St Pietro' red metro button on the Google map, it doesn't give you a metro line number/letter, but if you click on 'Ottaviano' nearly directly above it, you see that it's on line A...
Susan, I took a look at Google maps, and I do see the Red "M" at St. Pietro. To go along with my previous post I will add that, No, there is no transfer from Ottaviano the underground station to St. Pietro the train station. If you look at this metro map :...http://subway.umka.org/map-rome.html...: you can see that the line only connects through the rail stations, primarily Termini and Trastevere. I can also see where there is some confusion, between the use of the Red M, the fact that Ottaviano is also referred to as "Ottaviano-St. Pietro" and if you search enough, you can find Metro maps of future lines that will allow a connection to St.Pietro from Ottaviano. But for now, the connection would be what I detailed above.
Paul: Are you saying the same thing as Eileen (the post immediately above yours), that the mystery stop referred to in the OP may be a future metro station?
Wow - how confusing is this! Roma San Pietro (TODAY) is a regional train stop. The 64 bus route ends here at this station. IT IS NOT a metro station and has NO metro connections. Frankly, unless you are staying in this area, it's rather inconvenient. I've used it often to head to Civitavecchia via regional train but otherwise, rarely do I use Roma San Pietro. IN THE FUTURE, Metro Line C, WILL have a station here. Metro Line C will also have stops in the Cassia, in Piazza Risogimento, Roma San Pietro, etc. See this link for the proposed routes ****** http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/23/Roma_Metropolitana.svg/2000px-Roma_Metropolitana.svg.png ******* There is NO metro there now and thus NO metro connections at Roma San Pietro. Currently being "constructed," Line C was originally due to be completed a year or two AGO! The Ottaviano station is called Ottaviano-San Pietro because it is the CLOSEST metro station to St. Peter's Square and yes, this does lead to confustion.
Thanks, Ron. Glad to know it is confusing and not just that I'm incompetent reading a map. Still couldn't find a light rail map on the internet. We, unfortunately, picked our accommadations before studying how convenient the location would be. If there's a next time, we'll be smarter. Since we are west of the river and south of the Vatican, we will take the train to Trastevere from the airport and then take the train to S. Pietro. Once we are settled in, we'll figure out the transportation system. Thanks, everyone, for your help.
