Is there a need to register your trip?

My husband got his passport renewed and I was reading a brochure that came with it. It talked about going on line and registering your trip. Does anyone know if this is required? Haven't done it on previous trips and don't know if it's new. We leave Wednesday!

No. It's a service the State Department offers to help embassies contact you if there is some sort of emergency. It's not required. Heck, most trips, I don't know where we'll be after the first stop!

Hi Connie. I registered our trip to Italy last year but it's definitely not required. It sounded like a prudent thing to do at the time and only took a few minutes so I thought "what the heck". I've never registered previous trips. I'd say don't worry about it. Have a wonderful trip.

I remember when we went to Israel a number of years ago, we were told we should go to the Canadian Embassy in Tel Aviv and register our presence in the country. So we sought out the embassy to do as we were advised, much to the amusement of the embassy employees. We entered the details in a large book while they all snickered behind our backs. I had no great confidence that anyone would seek to rescue us should it be required!

I wouldn't do that unless you were going to Iran or North Korea. A lot of good that would do you anyway. You would rot in jail until Bill Clinton or Jimmy Carter came to rescue you.
