Is the Blue Grotto (Capri) worth while?

I am considering visiting the Blue Grotto in Capri but from what Rick Steves says about it, it can take up to a few hours of standing in lines waiting for a 5-minute visit inside the grotto. Do you feel it's worth while to visit it or would my time be better spent elsewhere? Thanks for your opinions.

As Rick recommends, get to Capri early, and go directly to the boats to the grotto. We went this past June. Even though it was expensive, it was one of the highlights of our trip. If you get an early start like we did, the wait is nothing.

You're going to get lots of opinions but no one really knows if this is something you'd enjoy.

The questioin has been asked before and many people here liked it. I thought it was a big waste of time. But if you're on Capri, it's something you have to do...at least once.

Skip the grotto and skip the island as well. They suck the money out of your pocketbook and give you nothing in return.

When we were in Capri I saw flyers for private hire boat rides around the island but they were expensive. We went down to the docks and were solicited for a private ride but I told him it was too pricey for our family of four. After bargaining on his part we ended up in a smaller boat for 3 hours with his sweet 17 year old grand nephew circling the island, going into smaller grottoes and jumping overboard for swims. It ended up being only a bit of a splurge for four people. It was a favorite of the 28 day vacation that year.

Sheron,

I didn't bother with a visit to the Blue Grotto on my last trip to Capri, as I only had one day on the island and wanted to explore a bit a take photos. At the time, I didn't feel that the cost and waiting time to see the inside of a cavern for a few minutes was "worthwhile" for me.

I have to agree with Ed that Capri can be expensive, but I still feel that a visit to the island is "worthwhile". The island seems to cater more to a "high end" clientele, so the stores and prices are commensurate.

Happy travels!

If your going to visit Capri I would say do the Blue Grotto. This is also something where once is enough. I enjoyed the ordeal of taking the boat out to the grotto and transfering to your rowboat to actually go inside. You pay (at least twice, plus tip) but it's fun and beautiful inside the grotto.

I found the towns of Capri and Anacapri not thrilling, but the cable car to the top of Monte Salero a must do for the views.

There are many opinions on the blue grotto but we did the blue grotto on our trip to Capri which was in the month of July. We did not have to wait at all for a boat to the grotto but we did have to wait a bit once at the grotto for a smaller boat to take us in. We didn't mind as the weather was stunning. Boat ride to the grotto is also beautiful. We look back on it and laugh as the rower was singing o solo mio but glad we did it.

It is certainly worthwhile. We daytriped from Rome last July (the beginning of July). I was worried the island & grotto would be mobbed, based on what I had read about crowd levels. It turned out to be fine. We ended up taking a boat tour around the island, which stopped at the Blue Grotto. When we got to the grotto you could choose to stay on the boat or transfer to a row boat to enter the grotto. It's a great experience like others have said. I also recommed you take the boat tour around the island. It's a great way to see all the natural features of the island. Capri is beautiful and is a must see in my opinion. My only regret is not getting to spend enough time there. I will say that bewteen the train/boats/ferries to go between Rome/Naples/Capri, it got expensive, but it was worth every penny.

Hi Sheron,

We woke up early to get one of the first boats to Capri and did the Grotto first. We were able to get a boat right away and didn't really have to wait.

I would recommend doing it... it is a bit pricey and you are only the the Blue Grotto 5-10min but it's a great/comical experience. Once you arrive to the grotto, little fishing boats will come to the boat and you transfer boats in the water. then you give them your money and you go in the grotto where they sing to you. I remember just laughing the whole time. It's something I would only do once in my life but I would recommend it.

Have a great trip!
