Is tethering allowed with TIM for Tourist SIM card plan?

I’m spending 10 days in Italy with my wife. I’d like to buy the TIM for Tourist plan and put the SIM card in my iPhone to get an Italian number. I see there is 15gb of data included in this plan for 30euro (including the 10euro for the actual SIM card).

Can anyone confirm that you are allowed to use tethering with this plan? What I want to be able to do is enable the hotspot function on my phone with the TIM for tourist plan that will allow my wife to access the internet via her iPhone. This way we can keep in touch back home with family in the US via iMessage and FaceTime using the 15gb of data. Is there any issue with that? I’ve read about issues with Message not being able to work but I’m not sure. I guess I could just use Viber or whatsapp, but tethering is the main question at this point.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. The TIM website doesn’t come out and directly say if tethering to enable your phone as a hotspot is allowed so hopefully someone can speak from recent experience with the TOM for Tourist plan specifically.

Thanks!

Thanks for your reply. Are we to assume that the info below that they list under more info is inclusive of all there plans? I did see this earlier as I was searching, but wasn’t sure if this was for all TIM plans including the promotional TIM Tourist plan.

More info

some VoIP has been blocked in the past, but this ban was lifted in 2016
tethering is enabled and allowed
APN: ibox.tim.it /or/ wap.tim.it
Website (mostly in Italian): http://www.tim.it

Thanks again!!

I had a TIM card in my iPhone this past May on our RS Village Italy tour. My husband sometimes shared my data using personal hotspot.

I don't know the answers to those questions, Mark. You'll just have to ask at the TIM store when you buy one. I'd guess they all allow tethering.

I usually take my Mac laptop and on that TIM plan I have often used my iphone as a hotspot for my computer when I had poor wifi in an apartment and needed the internet but also a keyboard. Wouldn't that be the same as using it for another iphone?

Yep that’s exactly what I’m asking about! Thanks Nancy.

I guess the question now is whether to go with TIM or Vodafone?? I’ve read a ton of articles saying TIM stores have not been helpful at taking the voucher for the TIM Tourist SIM card plan.

Mark, I guess I wouldn't bother with a voucher and just buy whichever SIM, Vodafone or TIM, is most convenient for you. Both companies have a good reputation for coverage throughout Italy. I have roamed on Vodafone IT with my Dutch Vodafone SIM on a few trips, and coverage has always been really good, at least in northern Italy.

Thanks Andrew. I figured ordering the voucher for TIM tourist was the way the go for convenience but then have read that many reviews saying the the TIM locations at FCO won’t honor the voucher and basically price gouge tourists for more money or flat don’t accept the voucher.

At the end of the day I just want a SIM card that works, doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and is convenient to get when I land at FCO since I won’t be using a ton of data.

We've never gotten any voucher --- just landed at FCO (or Milan's MXP or wherever), taken the train into the city and purchased our SIM cards at the train station. We leave our phones in airplane mode but with wifi turned back on until we get the SIM cards installed and activated. Just in case we get separated.

For some trips, such as the current one, we check into our apartment and then walk a few blocks to the nearest Vodafone or TIM store. Yes, in a perfectly ideal world, it would be best to be able to get the SIM cards at the airport, but we've only done that once (at FCO) and they did charge us extra for that privilege.

The TIM store at FCO is company owned and I’ve gotten my SIM there on 3 occasions and always have used a prepaid voucher. I’ve never had a negative customer service incident there. It seems that when they enter your voucher number, hey already have some of your info and the transaction is quick and they know exactly what you want.

Philip, thanks so much for your reply! I ad read some horror stories from others about them not being willing to honor the vouchers for the TIM for tourist plan. Is there a specific store that you went to each time at the FCO airport? Someone was mentioning a store in Terminal 3 and maybe another TIM store near baggage claim?

Thanks for any details you may be able to provide. I definitely want to make sure I go to a TIM company owned store.
