Hi
is termini area safe for solo female traveler? I found a hostel that was good price and has good reviews, but i heard its not the safest area and should come back in a taxi? Hotel itself is safe, but is the area? Im traveling in september
can you give me tips to feel safe around the area? should I take taxis to go back at night? what times should i avoid being out? is it safe to be back to the hotel around 9pm? And if not, should I take uber/taxi?
would it be safe for me to taxi/uber from the center to my hotel in termini? should i change hotels
I've never had any problems in the area and spend a few days a couple of times a year in a hotel near Termini. As with any place keep your eyes and ears open and you should be fine.
I have stayed in that area on my own and had no issues. I will be back in a few weeks staying at The Beehive which is a 5 min walk from the station.
Termini is full of homeless and refugees during the night. While reading an interview with one of these persons, today I discovered one of the reasons they all sleep there: "I feel safe here, Termini is always full of cops".
Unfortunately the number of cops is limited whereas the growing numbers of homeless attracts more and more predators who hide in the crowd of harmless guys.
All this to say that the area around Termini is safe during the day, but you'd better avoid walking in and around the station's dark corners after midnight.
There are spots that are better than others, for example Via del Viminale near the Opera House, but it is not a desirable area at night for a single woman walking alone. In particular the area north of the station is worse. The chance of becoming victims of actual violence is very low, however that are a lot of undocumented migrants, all male and young, congregating in the area, who, at the sight of lone women walking by, like to engage in importunate cat calling or outright molestation. In all likelihood nothing bad will happen, but it will make you feel uncomfortable. I have a 39 year old cousin who lives in Rome, who said she would not walk around Termini alone at night, except for the time strictly necessary to get from/to transportation to her house, if she happens to use the train at night.
IMO it's worth paying a little more for peace of mind
@edwardius, do you mean pay for a taxi or another hotel? Is it a safe area?
Did you read our messages or not? It's safe during the day, like any areas in Western Europe.
Like many other areas around stations in Europe, It's not totally safe for a woman walking alone during the night. Luckily the number of cops patrolling the station prevents Termini to become a dangerous place when it's dark, but you wouldn't feel comfortable surrounded by homeless and refugees.
thank you dario!
so, per my question, im better off at night taking a taxi or uber back to the hotel, right?
Hi,
You say you are travelling in September, do you mean this September? If so, can you find a place you can afford in a different location? Perhaps closer to the pantheon, or piazza navona? If you can, then I would suggest you move. If you cannot, then take a taxi.
As well, travelling on your own, be careful of pickpockets, you can get tired and distracted with just one person. This can happen anywhere on your travels, even in good locations. And there has been some discussion of how to choose a taxi safely in Rome, please do a search on this website for that.
hi lisa,
this september
its been hard to find another affordable solution, so per your suggestion ill do taxi or uber. thank you
ill do taxi or uber.
no Uber as we know it in Rome. It is Uber Black- more like a limo service
There are a few apps that you can use to book a taxi, otherwise call or have your hotel call for you.
Cannot flag one down, have to be at at taxi stand
those taxi fares may eat into your hostel price saving

Agreed, and the Uber limo service is almost twice as expensive. Could definitely offset savings in accommodations but that would depend on how much the hostel is costing. Only the OP can do the math to see if a hotel in a safer area that would allow her to walk to her hotel compares to the hostel and taking taxis, depending on how many times that would be necessary late at night. It would also depend on how late at night she'd be walking around the Termini area and how far to the hostel from the nearest bus/metro stop. May not be any problem at all at 10:00pm, but midnight or after could be a different story.
Which hostel are you staying at?
We used taxis in Rome in April a few times because it was convenient and we were tired. Fare was never more then 10 Euro. Small price for convenience and safety sometimes.
