We have 6 days to see Milan and the lake Como area. Having never done this I need some advice from anyone that has done this
It is not difficult, but do you need a car? It’s actually easier by train.

From MILANO CENTRALE

choose date and time.
Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio are the 3 towns in the Midlake that are best connected by frequent ferries. You can stay in any of them, and rely on ferries to visit places all over the lake. The train line also is available but only along the Eastern shore. Varenna is the one served by train of the 3 aforementioned towns
.
We did this once with friends who were insistent on a car and it was a waste. The car was parked at the hotel in Bellagio almost the whole week (friends paid the parking since they were so set on having a car). We got around the lake area with ferries. We did drive to Bergamo for a day, but didn't need a car for a week to do that. Then we drove the car back to Milan and dropped it off before our final day in Milan. It would have been simpler and cheaper by train.
Skip the car and use the train or boats.
