Is March a good month for Italy travel?

We're thinking of traveling through Italy during the last half of March. We'll be mostly from Rome north to Venice. We'd like to avoid the crowded time and still have fairly decent weather. Does anyone know if late March is a good time? If not, what month would be better? Thanks.

Venice: March avg daily high temp 53, low 41; 4 weeks later in April high 62, low 50.Rome: March avg daily high 59, low 45; in April 66 and 50.It's the usual trade-off or balancing of: you trade somewhat fewer tourists for a greater probability of cooler and damper weather, some sights not open and those that are on shorter hours, and some tourist businesses such as transportation on curtailed schedules. It's like a lot of things, you balance the pros and cons and make a judgment call for you and your travel partner.

Ray, if you want less tourists, March is great. Weather varies so much from year to year. In '07, my son was on Venice for Carnivale (February)and didn't have cold weather at all. I find that slightly cooler waehter is much better for all of the walking involved.

We have usually gone in Mid March and have rarely gone further south than Siena. Weather has been varied over the years, but rarely unpleasant. We usually take a lightweight fleece jacket and a rainshell. We had many days when it was cool at night and in the early morning but went to nearly 70 during the day. We had one day a couple of years ago where it rained solid all day in Venice but that was the only time. We went to Murano that day and dried out and warnmed up in front of glass furnaces.

There are fewer crowds, but in out of the way tourist destinations away from the cities you may find fewer places open for business. But the ones that are love you.

We have traveled to Italy in mid March twice and experienced great weather. We are planning a trip for next March as well. We tend to keep a flexible schedule so that if there is a particularly nice or bad weather day, our activities are adjusted accordingly.

I go each year to Italy for business and generally go in March. I have always had great weather (maybe just lucky) and it is definately not as crowded. This year I went in May and had quite ordinary weather - lots and lots of rain and lots of people. It is hard to predict but I'd go with late March. You may get some wet days but that can happen any time.

March was a wonderful time to go to Italy for my little group. Fewer crowds and the weather really isn't bad. We were there in mid-March of this year--Verona, Venice, Modena, Brescia and Florence.

We went in late March and except for the occasional rain, the temps were moderate. We alsways had a long sleeve shirt and carried a light jacket or fleece with us. Given the cheaper rates and less tourists (although I didn't find Rome and Venice all that slow) it's a good trade off.

I have been twice in March and think it is a great time to visit Italy. Cheaper airfare and lodging costs and fewer tourists. In March 2007, I was in Tuscany for two weeks. The first week was sunny, cool and windy. I spent the weekend in Venice. There it was warm enough to sit at outside cafes in shirt sleeves, mostly sunny, some clouds, no rain. The second week, cold and rainy on Monday (we toured Assisi with Anne Robichaud anyway), snow(!) on Tuesday, it was beautiful and melted within hours, overcast on Wednesday and Thursday, sunny and pleasant on Friday. I spent a week in Rome in March 2003, and out of six trips to Italy, it was the only trip where it did not rain while I was there.

We are spending the last two weeks of October in Milan and Tuscany and I am really curious what the weather will be like. But as for March, I think it is a wonderful time to be in Italy.

I lived in Italy for several years - Chioggia (50km south of Venice). March weather will be cool and maybe rainy. It will be fairly decent. I prefer September. The weather is perfect (for me and my wife, we like it on the warm side). Most of the tourists are gone and alot of the hotels drop there rates.

I traveled thru Italy (Milan, Lucca, Florence,Siena, and Venice) in early March a few years ago. It was chilly and a little rainy at times, but if you are flexible and go the the museums when it rains and enjoy the outdoor cafes, etc when it's sunny - you'll be fine. What's great about traveling, is experincing the different areas of the world during the different seasons. Tuscany was so lush and green - I will never forget how beautiful the country side looked from the top of the Duomo in Florence. A plus is there are less crowds, cheaper hotel rates, and shorter lines. You'll probably never have to wait for a table for dinner.
