Is late July still in time to avoid Palio crowds?

I'm just starting to plan this, but we would likely be in Siena (if we go) in the last week of July. Is that still early enough to avoid Palio hotel rush and crowds? If not, I'll look at shuffling the schedule. We were in Barcelona during La Merce last year, and I'd rather avoid THAT again.

No experience but Palio is July 2 and Aug 16 so I'd think late July is a bit of a sweet spot for lesser crowds- not NO crowds but not Pailo sized.

You could look at booking.com for your dates and dates around Palio to get an idea of how crowded it might be.
