Is ITA a good option?

I'm searching flights to Rome from the US, and ITA keeps popping up. I've never heard of it until this evening. It looks like a rather new airline relatively speaking.

Does anyone have experience with ITA that you could share? Also, with news of a buyout from Lufthansa, does that mean I wouldn't get Delta miles even if I purchase the ticket before the transaction happens (if it happens)?

I want to stay away from Air Canada and Toronto as an option. Any other options worth considering? I don't live near a direct flight hub.

Thanks

That makes for a lot of possibilities.

Care to narrow down where in the US is the origin of your flight?

ITA is the airline that was reformed after Alitalia folded in October 2021, after 75 years in operation. Alitalia had been the flagship airline of Italy, and the 12th largest airline in the world.

By the way, our flight in September 2022, from Denver to Rome was on American Airlines, Denver to Dallas/Ft. Worth, then DFW to Rome.

Any chance you’d want to look into getting to Dallas/Ft. Worth one way or another, then flying directly to Rome from there? You’d arrive in Rome in the early morning, for a pretty much full day once you’ve landed.

ITA is a NINO airline. New In Name Only.
When Alitalia folded the Italian government took over the new company but to satisfy the EU rules it needed to be a clear different airline with different name.
In reality all the staff is former Alitalia, and most airplanes still have the Alitalia livery because they haven’t even painted them all yet.
The “new” Alitalia by a different name is smaller but losing money like the “old” Alitalia. The Italian government owns 100% of it now, and is hoping to sell it soon to whoever is foolish enough to buy it. It won’t go bankrupt, ever (even though most Italian taxpayers wish it did since it’s a money sinkhole). Obviously if Lufthansa decided to buy it, they will probably join the Star Alliance (United, Lufthansa, etc.) and if your purchase happened after the acquisition you would get miles on your United Mileage Plus account (if you have one) rather than with Delta Skymiles.

Thanks for the replies. I can certainly try to get to DFW to get a direct flight. I need to feel better about ITA even though it has a long history as a different airline. The reviews don't seem that great as far as customer service, etc. I'll look more into it. The prices are significantly better than Delta, KLM etc.
