Our cruise ends at Civitavecchia on September 22, 2018 and we would like to go to Florence rather than Rome to experience the museums and the countryside. Just wondering if it is worth it to stay the night in Tuscany and would it be difficult to get transportation to Florence. When I say Tuscany I am referring to the outskirts of Florence within 10 miles or less. If there are any lodging recommendations I would very much appreciate it. Budget would be $150 per night.
Do as many nights in Florence as you can. It is a wonderful, vibrant city. If you can wander out into the Tuscan countryside go as far as you can. It is breathtakingly beautiful. The Italian train system is wonderful, getting from Civitavecchia to Florence will be a great ride. The Trenitalia website is very user friendly - http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom-en. No help on a hotel as we stayed outside the city in Sienna. Enjoy your journey and take it all in.
Another quick thought, should time allow, check out Tours by Roberto. He offers a range of Tours in Tuscany. We took a wine tour with him and it is by far one of the best times we have ever had while traveling. Roberto knows Tuscany inside out. He works hard to ensure you have a wonderful time. http://www.toursbyroberto.com/
How long do you have to visit Florence? I think you would be better served by staying in Florence and taking a day trip to Tuscany. As Bill mentioned you could take a wine tour.
I don't consider 10 miles out from Florence to be the "Tuscany" I imagine you are thinking about. You have to go a little further than that. Going south, around Greve is the start of the classic Tuscan countryside. Greve is 29km south of Florence.
Thanks so much for the information. We will probable stay two nights and then head to Venice.
