This is our first trip to Italy and we have 3 days in Rome, my husband wants to spend one of those days in Pompeii, is it work the trip? If so, how would you recommend getting there and back?
Sarah, Visiting Pompeii from Rome will be a LONG day trip. The usual method is to take the EuroStar Italia / Alta Velocita (fast) trains from Rome to Naples, and then transfer to the Circumvesuviana train which will take you to Pompeii. I didn't check the exact times, but that trip is ~3-4 hours each way from Rome. When you leave the station in Pompeii, it's only a short walk to the entrance to the site. When you reach the area of the ticket booth, you'll probably be approached by local Guides offering their services. You might consider that as I've found that it makes for a much more interesting tour. If you want to pre-book an outstanding Guide, check the website for Gaetano Manfredi. There's A LOT to see in Rome, and with the day trip to Pompeii you won't have much time to see the sights there. Happy travels!
With only 3 days in Rome I would skip the trip to Pompeii. It takes a full day to travel there, spend quality time at the ruins and then come back. Only you can decide if it's worth it or not. I love visiting Pompeii but with only 3 days I stick to Rome and see as much of it as you can. You'll still miss a lot of things but at least you'll have that extra day to try to squeeze in more. Donna
I second the notion of spending your time in Rome instead of trying to do Pompeii. Rome has so much to see that you'll most likely feel like you just scratched the surface. Also, since this is your first trip to Italy, you'll likely get a bit of culture shock and having to get to Pompeii and back on your own for your first trip to Italy might be a bit much. A visit to Pompeii would also be more rewarding if it can be combined with a visit to National Archaeological Museum in Naples which holds the objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Consider Ostia Antica as an alternative to Pompeii. It's about the same size and only an hour away. It's one of the hidden gems of Italy. Info on the logistics in the RS Rome 2011 book. Happy travels.
I would definitely save Pompeii for another trip. There is SO much to do in Rome and in 3 days, you'll barely skim the outer edge of the surface! I would spend all 3 days in Rome and combine a visit to Pompeii with a future visit to the Amalfi Coast.
I had 4 days in Rome on my last trip. I had planned on going to Pompeii, too. There was really too much to see and because we did not want to jam in sites to leave for a full day, we skipped it. Rome is exhausting and if you try to jam in sites, there may be repercussions. I did feel I had an episode of what people claim to be exhaustion, and we took our time with Rome. Oh well, have a good trip.
You could visit Pompeii, but it will be a LONG day. With only 3 days in Roma I would save Pompeii for another trip. italy seduces the traveler, so you will be planning a return trip and then you can visit Pompeii. Buon viaggio,
