Is it safe to park in the lot outside of Orvieto

We are 3 couples driving from Rome to Tuscany.
We are planning to stop at Orvieto to see the magnificent Duomo on our way to Tuscany. We will have all our luggage with us of course.
We keep reading about car breakins in parking lots. Is it safe to park in the lot outside of Orvieto while we explore the town for a couple of hours?
Please advise.

My husband and I stayed at a B&B outside Orvieto and drove to Orvieto nearly daily. We always parked in the large lot outside town and took the elevator up to town. Never had a problem. You’ll love Orvieto and will wish you would have chosen to spend more time there than just a look-see. It’s totally safe.

Not sure how you can claim it is totally safe unless they have guards patrolling the lot. S*** happens. But if the luggage is hidden from view, and nothing is left visible inside the car (do all this BEFORE you park), then any risk is greatly minimized, and the OP should be fine.

NEVER leave luggage/valuables in plain sight. If bags are in a trunk and not visible, okay, but don't issue an invitation. Better safe than sorry.

No public parking is 100% safe.

You can minimize your risk by having luggage and valuables out of sight.

Do not leave tourist stuff, guide books etc visible. Do not leave clues that there may be hidden treasure.

Curious what size of vehicle you have ?? -- 6 people and luggage is a lot. With a big van, assuming, you should try to park in a visible area - not in the back corner of the lot. There is always some risk so take you critical items -- passports, money, credit cards with you. But not every car or even half are broken into. Just have to risk it a bit.
