Is it possible to spend 2 days up around Dolomites?

We want to visit Seiser Alm, potentially do light hike up the mountain...(not all the way up but some point), and see beautiful lakes (also need recommendation).

We will be arriving in Milan. Should we visit the Dolomite region first before Venice? Is it closer/ easier to get from Venice to Dolomite?

How do we get to Seiser Alm?

Also, should we rent a car in Bozen to drive around? Is there cable ride or a way to get up the Dolomite mountains?

This is our first time traveling in Europe, and we are as inexperienced as we can get. Thank you so much in advance for your help!

You can take the train (from either direction) to Verona and change to a northbound train, getting off at Bolzano. From Bolzano you can take a bus (I think it's #170) from near the train station to the base of the lift (Seiser Alm Bahn) that goes up to the Seiser Alm. I think you can go directly, but I remember that in 2015 I went to Castelrotto first, walked around the pretty little town for a while, and then took a bus on to the Seiser Alm Bahn. I suggest using an electronic map to follow your progress. My bus driver forgot where I wanted to get off, and I didn't know what to look for.

There is excellent public transportation throughout the Dolomites, so you don't have to rent a car. A car will give you some additional flexibility, but you don't have a great deal of time to go exploring, and it will take some time to pick up the car and drop it off later.

When is your trip?

Hannah,

As this is your first time in Europe, I'd suggest reading Europe Through The Back Door prior to your trip. That provides a lot of information on how to travel well in Europe. You may also want to have a look at the RS Italy guidebook.

Some additional information would be helpful. For example where are you flying from and when is this trip taking place? I note that you have quite a number of other posts, but I haven't read all of them. It would help to see an overview of your entire Itinerary.

If the Dolomites are going to be your first stop, I'd suggest spending one night either in Milan or Verona, to get over jet lag and get your bearings. I wouldn't want to make the trip from MXP to Castelrotto after a long international flight, but from Verona it's an easy trip to Bolzano. You'll need to do some research on using the trains, as in some cases you'll be making changes, and there are a few potentially expensive caveats to be aware of.

You might consider staying in Castelrotto for a few days, as that's a good "home base" for exploring that area. As mentioned in the previous reply, there's a bus from there to the cable car station at Seiser Alm / Alpi di Siusi. You might find this website helpful - https://www.seiseralm.it/en/summer-dolomites.html

@acraven Thank you so much for your helpful info. For two days in area, what do you expect the transportation cost to be? Is there a website with advance pass that I can purchase ahead of time!

It is a relief that we won’t need to rent a car.

Thank you!

Ken – Thank you for your helpful. I will visiting: France (Alsace region), Switzerland (Lauterbrunnen area), Italy (Dolomites, Como, and Venice), and then Portugal.

Do you think Europe Through the Back Door is a better book or RS Italy Guidebook?

Also – if you have to pick just one alps region, would you go to Schilthorn or Dolamite in Italy?

I notice there are cable ride … not sure up what mountain peaks? Is it possible to ride train/ cable up the peak like in Switzerland?

I like to purchase transportation ahead of time, does the guidebook provide the info? How much do you anticipate the cost in for 2 days in Dolamite are to be for one person (transportation wise)?

Thank you so much!
