is it more economical and easier to fly between italian cities or train

My family of four (two adults and two college student girls) are travelling to Italy this May. We are seasoned train travelers but it has become more expensive since we were last there. We want to start in Milan and travel to Florence, Rome and Naples area then fly out of Rome in 12 days. Any thoughts?

The distances are short so the train would be the most convenient. I only consider air when the train ride exceeds six or seven hours. There is a big hassle factor when using airlines -- arrive early, remote airports for many discount airlines, limited luggage, security checks, etc. I would pay a premium to ride the trains.

One (or more) of the posters on this board has a general rule of thumb that if the journey is under 6 hours, take the train. Time and hassle has a cost to consider as well. Not to mention better scenery on the ground. I would take the train.

Train, definitely. You don't say whether you've traveled 1st or 2nd class before. Go 2nd class and save a chunk of change.
