I have been to Sorrento and Pompei. I regret not going to Positano or Capri. Can I see one of them in one day trip from Rome. Fast train to Naples then local train or bus around the coast. Right?? I am willing to get up at the crack of dawn. I looked at car prices and there are a lot of extra charges, so it dosen't look like it would be much cheaper than a train. thank you, Tina
Tina, This question was asked a few days previously on the HelpLine, so you might want to have a look through other Posts as the answers may be relevant to your situation as well. The "bottom line" is that while it might be possible to visit Positano or Capri on a day trip from Rome, it's not really practical due to the travel times. You'd spend more time in travel than you would in Positano or Capri, so it hardly seems worthwhile. Since Capri is an island, you'd also have to allow for travel and waiting times on the boats in both directions. Any unexpected delays could upset the most carefully laid travel plans. My suggestion would be to leave these for a future visit, when you have more time and can properly enjoy both places. Happy travels!
IMHO, this is doable, but not very practical. If you decide to do it be aware that you will be looking at a VERY LONG day. Buon viaggio,
You can do it if you want but it is about 8 hours total travel time. Hour and half approximate on fast train to Naples, hour on train to Sorrento and hour on bus to Positano. If you had regrets before, then go for it. You can probably get to Positano by noon, have lunch and then walk around for a few hours, leave by 4 pm and back to Rome by 8PM. Good luck.
I think Gail's estimate of 8 hours total travel time is right on. It's a bit easier to get to Positano if you take the train to Salerno instead of Naples. Then in Salerno you can walk to the ferry dock and take a ferry or hydrofoil directly to Positano. For Capri, you'd take the train to Naples, then a bus to the Naples ferry dock and a ferry to Capri. In each case you'd have to catch the earliest possible fast train out of Rome and the latest possible fast train for your return. You can find train schedules on trenitalia.com With either destination, you could probably manage 6-7 hours of sightseeing time. Much easier & less stressful if you could spend one night at either destination, but doable in a hectic day if you can't.
Anything is feasable but it's not the way to see the Amalfi coast. You really need to stay for at least two nights to get a taste of this area. Positiano is much nicer than Amalfi. We loved the little town of Ravalo a short bus ride from Amalfi up the mountain. There is so much to see that a day trip is not a good idea.
