Is it difficult to return a car at the Milan Airport

My family and I are traveling to Italy in May 2012. We have been to Italy several times but this will be the first time that we are returning home from Milan. Is it difficult to return a car to that airport. I've returned a car to FCO in Rome and it wasn't bad at all. Just wondering if it'll be bad in Milan. Also we will be traveling to the Milan airport from Lucca. Is there a train that we can take to the airport to avoid having to return the car? Thank you in advance for your help.

Malpensa airport in Milan is a totally modern facility and returning rental cars there is a piece of cake. If you prefer, you can take a train from Lucca to Milan. Then from central Milan there is a train direct to the airport - the "Malpensa Express."

Malpensa is very easy to return a rental car. You might as well save yourself the additional train fare.

Malpensa is a breeze: well-signed access to "car rental parking", then a gate that gives you access to the lots where all rentals are, then easy covered access to the terminal. Linate: a bit more tricky, gotta pay attention to the signs to avoid getting into the wrong parking lot.

Returning the car at Malpensa is fairly easy. Routes are well marked. Remember though that it about a 4 hour drive with traffic from Lucca to MXP, so plan accordingly.

We've decided to return the car at the Malpensa Airport (thanks to your advice and assurance of the ease of returning a car there) the day before the flight (due to the four hour travel time and a fairly early flight) and spend our last night in Milan. Thanks again!
