Is carry-on the same for partner airlines?

Hi,
I will be flying United and Luthansa on the same ticket. Outbound: United to Munich, transfer to Luthansa for Pisa. Departing Naples with Luthansa to Munich, and picking up United for the States. The published carry-on limitations are different for each airline. Will Luthansa honor United's, as it is the least restrictive? Or should I plan for the most restrictive of about 14 lbs for Luthansa?

So many minutia questions, and I thank all for your for helping me!
Elaine.

They don't have to honor partner airline's weight and size limits because they might use different planes. I would definitely go with the most restrictive rules and then you'll have no problem on either.

It is the check-in personal and/or at the boarding gate that decide if it is too big or not. I find that Luthansa tends to be pretty strict especially about weight. To be safe, you need to go with the most restrictive.

Each airline has it’s own policies and they do not honor partners even when code sharing (example: you buy a United flight but it’s a codeshare and you are actually flying Lufthansa “metal”. It’s Lufthansa’s carry on rules that prevail). Follow the most restrictive and you will be fine.

Lufthansa was gate checking carry-ons on my flights last week--individually checking weights. For the flight over it was fine, just a smidge over for the flight home--but I much less mind checking on the way back, plus it was free. It was less than 14 lbs, but this was for the smaller plane, not the transatlantic portion.

It depends on the starter plane each leg so return home is definitely Lufthansa restrictions.

Lufthansa's carry-on weight limit is 8 kg, about 17.6 pounds, not 14 pounds. If Lufthansa is the operator of the flight, their rules govern carry-on.

The rules contained in United's Contract of Carriage with respect to
ticketing will apply to United's Codeshare services on flights
operated by another carrier. However, each Codeshare partner has terms
and conditions with respect to the operation of its own flights and
may differ from those set forth in United's Contract of Carriage with
respect to flights operated by United. Those terms and conditions,
which are found in the partner's contract of carriage for that
partner's flights, are incorporated into United's Contract of Carriage
by reference and apply to Codeshare services provided by United on a
flight operated by that partner, which supersede United's rules that
would be otherwise applicable. Terms and conditions that may differ
between United and the partner include, but are not limited to:
baggage acceptance, allowance and liability;

Just pay the money and check a bag at Lufthansa coming back -- hand carry any valuable/fragile items, figure that you can use the clothes you left at home if your checked bag gets delayed. Note that if you used a United Explorer credit card you can get one free checked bag on the first set of flights but not on the flights starting on Lufthansa.

Hello everyone,
Thank you very much for all the good advise, the corrected information on Luthansa weight limits, and esp the fact that if I use my United charge card to check bags fee, that does not include a flight starting with Luthansa - that was a surprise. Again thank you very much!
