Going to be in Italy...any problems charging your iPod classic? We have all necessary outlet converters for camera, phone, etc..but read somewhere that iPod might fry?
We didn't have any trouble with iPod Nanos or iPhones this year.
We just got back from Italy and had no problem at all charging our ipods. We did notice we needed two plugs (one on top of the other) to allow the flat ipod charger to fit into the round wall plug.
Italy uses 220-volt electricity, which is twice the voltage of ours here in the US.
Look at the fine print on the charger you use for your iPod. It should say something like "Input: 100-240V". This means it can handle anything in that range, including the 110V your house probably has in the US and the 220V you'll find in Italy. All you'll need is the adapter so your US-style prongs can mate with the Euro-style sockets.
On the other hand, if your iPod charger does NOT say it can handle input over 200 volts, you'll need a converter to transform the 220V down to 110.
Your Ipod will be fine without the converter. You will only need an adaptor. I've used my Ipods in Europe with no issue for the last 4 years.
Odds are that you don't need a converter for your camera or phone either. Check the chargers and see if they say 110-240v. Most cameras and cell phones only need the adaptor.
Jo,
What type of Charger are you using with your IPod Classic? IPods normally charge via a USB connection to the host computer, so I'm assuming you have some form of "travel Charger"?
It's important to check the Charger to determine the Input Voltage ratings. As the others have said, if the Charger states "100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz." then it will work fine in Europe with just a Plug Adapter.
I've been using a www.logiix.net/itoolkit.asp?pg=products&specific=jnmmloh Charger on the past few trips to Europe and it's worked well.
You might also have a look at www.callpod.com/products/chargepod as this device provides one Charger that will power up to six devices (including IPods and Cell Phones).
One final note regarding your Phone. I'm assuming that it's a quad band GSM model from AT&T or T-Mobile? Verizon and Sprint models won't work in Europe (except for the Verizon "world" models).
Happy travels!
