IPAD 3G Reception

What is best way to get an IPAD 3G up and receiving after landing at Fiumicino? Any experiences with a store in the airport etc that will sell the SIM card and install it for you? Or buy it ahead and install on the airplane?

You can buy an international data plan by the month from AT&T right on the ipad. It would probably be cheaper at an Italian Wind, Tim or Vodafone store but unless you know exactly where to go in the airport you could spend a lot of time looking for it. Where are you going that you need it as soon as you hit the ground? I am going to Venice and my 2nd stop after the hotel in a Tim or Wind store. There are several places to buy international data SIMs online but it would be much cheaper buying it in Italy.

Thanks Lisa. I will do the same. As to why, I want the IPAD 3G up and running with locator on the maps. I may be able to leave the hardcopy maps buried in the bag only as backup. I am also contemplating putting key information on the cloud. Anyone have additional input on handy locations at Termini for example. Also experiences good or bad with the store personnel activating the change.

I have all my travel info in Tripit.com Before I go I will save it all as a PDF so I can view it offline in Good Reader if I am not online. There are a few offline map apps like Offmaps 2 and My Maps you can use. I have also set up my own google maps of each city I will visit that I access online using an app called cartographer.
I may buy a minimal iPad international plan from AT&T and later get a SIM but I'm more concerned about getting iPhone data so I am buying the big international data plan for that.
