Rain is inevitable for our upcoming trip to Italy this week(April 29th - May 22). Venice is expected to have 40% chance of rain on Wednesday &90 % chance on Friday. Cinque Terre has similarly bleak forecasts for our 3 days there. Consequently we're contemplating breathable, lightweight rain pants(weight 6 ounces). We already have breathable, lightweight rain jackets. Has any
traveled using this type of gear, or do you just hope for the best?
Also, are there any places where can we purchase an inexpensive phone in Venice for our time in Italy?
Thanks,
Bob
TIM, Vodaphone and other stores have inexpensive phones (I bought a TIM phone four years ago, about €30 for the phone and ten minutes), I still use it. You can buy additional minutes at tabacchi or at the phone brand stores.
I don't budge without a rain jacket. Rain pants only go with the expedition pack-out. You'll get drizzle, not a hurricane. Britches dry out pretty fast and you don't get cold if your torso is dry. Hopefully those rain jackets cover your butts and don't just end at the waist.
Having been to Italy 14X now...and I'm leaving on Wed - (guess I'll see you in Venice, we'll be there about the same time) I always pack a rain jacket. One thing I learned the last time I traveled...I'm now packing compact lightweight umbrellas as well. While the rain jacket will keep you dry....the hood is not conducive to sightseeing. It's really hard to look up and around with the hood over your head, keeping your head dry. You just can't look up and around, but down is easy. The hood just gets in the way.
Others may post that you can always purchase a cheap umbrella from the men that suddenly appear all around you hawking their wares, but I can tell you that you'll spend 5E or more for a piece of crap. One brief wind, and it's trashed. It is looking like rain for the first week of May almost everywhere in northern Italy...
I have a Marmot rain jacket that I use ( but I'm also a hiker, so it's used for all terrain). we are bringing rain pants this time as well, as we are hiking through Umbria the 2nd week of May. Rain pants are not as important as the jacket...at most, the top of your legs will get wet, but if you found some lightweight pants, take them. I'm sure you have find space in your carryon for them.
