When in Italy I had trouble connecting with wireless internet on my laptop. When I reached the 3rd hotel, an Italian hotel guest was able to program my laptop so that I could access the free hotel internets. I don't know what he did to make it possible. Does anyone know if there is a special setting for Italy? It was great to have free internet wireless access in all the Italian hotels that we stayed in. The only one who charged was a chain name that catered to American tourists (I believe it was an American chain. )
It must have been the settings on your computer. I don't know of anything that is different. We are just back from 30 days in and around Italy. We were using a netbook that always connected. Technically speaking all of our hotels' wireless systems were always locked and required both a login and passport to access. Some worked very well and some were so so but sure beats the one terminal in the hotel lobby which was common a few years ago.
I had no problem connecting in Israel, Mexico, U.S. or England. However, no matter how much I'd use the password etc. I would not connect until some changes were made to make it happen. I just don't know what those changes were.
I've even had a few problems connecting to the internet at some places around home as well, so not sure how much success I'll have when I'm in another country.
A few days ago, I tried both my IPod Touch and MacBook at a local Cafe that offers free Wi-Fi (a Password is required). Neither device would connect, even with the correct Password. Both devices work fine on my home wireless network (again, Password required) and both could "find" the network but would not connect. Neither the owner of the Cafe or I could figure out what the problem is?
I also tried the IPod Touch last week at another local establishment that offers free Wi-Fi (and one that I've used in the past with no problems), but again it wouldn't connect.
I'll probably have to pay a visit to the local computer guru to get some idea on what the problem is.
Have someone who understands your wireless system check your setting against default and see where the difference is. It has to be your system and not something unique to Italy or anywhere else.
