On the left window it also says "internet cafe". It appears to be a copy shop, computer terminals are common in those types of places.

I simply thought that if you needed to wash your clothes, it would be handy to have an internet cafe across the street while you wait for you underwear to dry.

"Internet point" is often used instead of "Internet cafe" to refer to the type of place you're looking for. Many places to access the Internet have computers, phone booths, fax machines, and copy machines. They are most heavily used by immigrants getting in touch with their home country, and often are only secondarily for tourists. While you can often buy a can of Coke or get coffee from a machine, these places are not "cafes" in the usual sense of the word. They're not for lingering when you're not online, and they won't have a food selection. They work fine, but don't expect Starbucks (or Tim Horton). They are often hot, by the way, with all those machines and not enough ventilation. It is Italian law that to use a public Internet point, you have to show your passport, and the establishment will make a copy. This is to foil Internet predators and terrorists. So, be sure to bring your passport, and don't worry when they ask for it.

I'm pretty sure they've relaxed the passport requirement in the last couple of years, and a driver's license should work. I seem to remember that working for us in Rome last year.

Be very careful about using Google Street View Maps to find things in Rome. For example, the watermark on the one that the commenter above linked to indicates the photo was taken in April 2008. Lots of things have changed in Rome since that time. Businesses like this come and go. Where I live in Rome looks like a graffitied mess on Google Street View (it is not, and has not been for as long as I have been here; it also shows a bank with an ATM across from my building which is not there, and hasn't been the whole time I've been here, though I wish it were!). A grocery store I used to shop at suddenly closed in the past year, etc. Things are constantly in flux here and if you rely on a photo taken 4+ years ago, you may run into trouble.

I didn't use "street view" per se to find this internet cafe. I typed "internet cafe near Via Ferruccio, 46, 00185 Roma" into the Google maps search box and it gave me a listing of nearby establishments. Granted the search listings may be outdated as well, but they are generally more up to date than the street view snap shots. http://www.sirasa.it/homepage_1.html

I have also found search listings to be outdated and, at times, odd. I use Google Maps all the time, but I am not surprised when what it indicates is not reality. Incidentally, check out what I found yesterday while looking for something on a Google Map (focus on what is in the center of this map)! http://goo.gl/maps/kAcR Helpful, that!

I used to use internet cafes but the last few years with the growth of WiFi and small internet capable devices I never do now. I take my netbook and use wifi. That does mean taking a device. I don't like the possibility of data less than safe in an internet cafe. I know there is not a keylogger on my device.
