Thanks for your comments on 'walking in Florence'. Now we are also wondering about internet access availabitliy in the event we choose a hotel without a computer for public use. How easy is to find internet cafes around the city.
Thks.
They're everywhere in Italy. The rates can vary greatly, being cheaper in larger cities. (Rome was 1.50 E an hour, Lucca was 10 E an hour.) Florence should be pretty cheap.
ludmilla, as mentioned previously, Internet cafes are usually easy to find. If your Hotel doesn't have access, they will probably be able to recommend a net cafe in the vicinity.
One point though, in order to use Net Cafes in Italy you MUST provide your Passport information and "register" before using the computer.
Cheers!
In addition, you can even find computers at the oddest places. In Switzerland we found one at Burger King! If you buy a meal, they'll give you internet access based on the amount you spend.
You won't have any problems finding an internet cafe. Just be careful of your things, like putting down packages in front of you, or keeping an eye for the "wandering" eyes.
Cheapest one I found in Florence was around the side of the departure intercity bus station. When you come out of SMN train station, go to your right past where the outgoing buses to Siena and other cities are. At the intersection, there was one for €2/hr and one for €1.5/hr. In the tourist areas, they were €4-5/hr.
Regarding the need for passports, what you actually need is just some form of government issued photo ID. We used our Washington State drivers licenses with no problem at all last month all across Italy. And about half the places didn't ask for them even though they're required to register that info. Welcome to Italy. :-)
I just got back and didn't find internet places as easy to find as I thought they would be--in any of the cities we visited.
You might do a map search and print out the map. A prominent chain in Italy is Internet Train but there are others.
Found them everywhere we looked in Rome and Siena. Florence should be just as easy. Many also offered phone booths with great phone rates back to the U.S.
We were just in Florence two weeks ago and used a chain of little Internet sweatshops named Internet Train. They cost E5 per hour, none of which went to pay for air conditioning. LOL We had to present ID and prepay for an amount of time, which was credited on a card they gave us. From then on we just took the card in and used it to log on. We used two different locations - one just to the east of the Duomo and another between the Bargello and the Arno.
Ludmilla, on my last trip to Florence I used an Internet cafe which was across the Ponte Vecchio and a little way down the first street to the right. It appeared to be part of a chain or franchise, with a purchase card which could be used by other places within the group.
If you would like a nice B & B with free internet access, stay at Tourist House Ghiberti, located about a block and a half from the Duomo. Great place to stay with internet, flat screen tv, dvds, all for free!
